antique pool table from Buffalo Billiards SupplyAn antique pool table is definitely an investment you want to take good care of. Fortunately, there are a lot of ways to maintain your antique pool table and keep it in the best shape possible. Many of them don’t require specialized equipment, but the sort of normal care and concern you would show any piece of wooden furniture.

For an older or antique pool table, there are some additional concerns and things you should pay attention to when keeping your pool table in good condition.

Table Cloth or Felt

On average, as long as you take good care of your pool table felt and avoid doing damage to it, it will last for anywhere between three to five years in home use, one to two years in a pool hall or club. Regular brushing in one direction with a good brush in sharp, straight strokes and vacuuming when the accumulation of chalk dust grows too high is important as well. When the felt becomes loose and rips and tears become a problem, it’s time to replace the felt.

Cushion Rubber

A well-maintained cushion rubber, of high quality, will last up to fifteen to twenty years. When replacing the felt, an inspection of the cushion rubber should be made to determine if they are still elastic and in good shape. If not, they should be replaced.

Pockets

If the pockets are damaged or causing problems when the balls are in use, it is time to replace them. This is easy to do, can be done with simple tools, and should be done regularly to keep your balls from falling onto the floor or being damaged.

Timber

The wooden components of the table should be treated like any other piece of wooden furniture. They should be cleaned on a regular basis, fixed and repaired as needed, and otherwise kept in good shape. Special care should be taken for the cushions and rails, since they are the most exposed to damage on a regular basis.
